Did you know? - PAR Deny Lists

We have enhanced our Ticketer system with the release of new ‘PAR Deny list’ functionality alongside existing card-level deny lists, helping to combat fraudulent ticket transactions made from mobile payment wallets.

What is it…?

PAR Deny lists significantly reduce the risk of unpaid journeys by identifying and denying fraudulent activity at the account level, unlike traditional methods that focus on suspicious activity at the individual card number (PAN) level. PAR Deny lists enable the ETM to block all cards associated with a user’s account, irrespective of the mobile wallet card number.

How does it work?

Operators face challenges when dealing with fraudulent customers who exploit mobile payment wallets such as ‘Apple Pay’ and ‘Google Pay’ to avoid paying for their travel tickets.

Traditional fraud prevention methods rely on the card number to flag suspicious transactions, meaning they only block specific cards. Mobile payment wallets use a different card number, potentially allowing fraudulent payments via mobile wallets to slip through undetected during ticket issuance.

Due to its account-level functionality, PAR Deny will restrict all cards associated with a user’s account that has been flagged as suspicious, regardless of the individual card number(s) used.

Requirements

Operators will need to have the latest software version on their ETMs to enable PAR Deny list. If you’re not sure which software version you’re running, don’t hesitate to reach out to our friendly support team who will swiftly and smoothly update your ETMs: info@ticketer.co.uk.

In Summary

  • The Ticketer ETMs now support PAR Deny lists to stop fraudulent ticket sales being issued to individuals who evade paying fares by repeatedly re-registering cards on their mobile payment wallets.
  • With the latest software version, when a ticket is being purchased by a mobile payment wallet card where the account linked to the card has been blocked for suspicious activity, the fraudulent ticket sale will not be authorised.
  • By preventing fraud at the account level rather than the card level, this technology enables operators to recover lost revenue and adds an additional layer of deterrent for fraud within public transport.
